Romanian Govt. gives extra day off to employees in the public sector

18 January 2017

Romania's Government decided today that Monday, January 23, will be a day off for the employees working in the public sector. The cabinet made this decision because Tuesday, January 24, is a legal day off in Romania, as the country celebrates the Union of the Romanian Principalities.

The state employees will thus have a mini-holiday from Saturday until Tuesday. This is not entirely good news for the state employees, as they will have to recover the extra free day on Saturday, January 28, or by working overtime until January 31.

“This facility doesn’t apply in the case of jobs in which the activity can’t be interrupted due to the production process’ character, or the specific activity,” reads a statement from the Government.

The measure will also not apply in the case of magistrates and other categories of court employees involved in trials that are already set to go to court on January 23.

The Romanian Parliament passed a bill last year that makes January 24, the day when Romania celebrates the Union of the Romanian Principalities, a legal day off.

This year, the employees in Romania will also benefit from days off on the first and second day of the Orthodox Easter, May 1, June 1, the first and second day of Pentecost, the Assumption of Mary (August 15), Saint Andrew (November 30), Romania’s National Day (December 1), and the first and second day of Christmas.

Romania will have 14 legal days off in 2017
