Romanian football manager, dismissed from team in Qatar, gets USD 2 mln compensation

Romanian football manager Dan Petrescu was dismissed from Al-Arrab football club in Qatar, after less than six months since taking over the team. He will receive a USD 2 million compensation from the club, according to Digisport.ro.

Dan Petrescu’s won only three of its eleven games with the Romanian on its bench. He might take over Russian club Kuban Krasnodar, which he had also previously managed from 2009 until 2012.

Petrescu, 46, is considered to be one of the most talented Romanian football managers of the younger generation. His first great performance was managing Romanian club Unirea Urziceni (2006-2009) and taking it from a newly promoted team in Romania’s top division to win the league, and play into the UEFA Champions League, in 2009.

He then went to Russia, to coach Kuban Krasnodar which he promoted to Russia’s Premier League. He also managed Dynamo Moscow (2012-2014).

As a player, Dan Petrescu was part of Romania’s “golden generation”, the national football team led by Gheoghe Hagi which made it into the quarter finals of the World Cup in 1994. His position was right defender. He played for Steaua Bucharest (1985-1991) but achieved international fame playing for Chelsea (1995-2000).
