Romanian Dacia suggests VAT removal for new car purchase

22 May 2015

Car producer Dacia has proposed the Finance Ministry to remove the VAT for the purchase of new cars, to increase sales.

Customers prefer second-hand cars, said Dacia vice president Constantin Stroe, cited by local Digi24. New cars accounted for only a quarter of the 290,000 car registrations last year.

Romanians bought in 2014 only 27,000 Dacia cars, even if the local factory produced almost 340,000 cars.

The current government programs are not really helping the market, Stroe said.

Last month, Dacia threatened that it would move its production from Mioveni, if the Government didn’t build the highway between Pitesti and Sibiu by 2020.
