Romanian Cultural Institute plans to create Romanian bookshops abroad

05 April 2013

The Romanian Cultural Institute ICR plans to create several Romanian bookshops abroad, targeting main cities such as Paris, Berlin, London, Rome and Madrid. The ICR wants to create this project by the beginning of September 2013, and says the costs of setting up a bookshop is not higher than the cost of organizing participation at a book fair. For the time being, ICR's main ways of promoting Romanian publications abroad are the transfer to ICR branches abroad and to some libraries, as well as taking part in international book fairs.

Romania's recent participation at the Paris book fair had a price tag of some EUR 450,000, with the costs shared equally between the ICR and ReedExpo. The ICR will provide EUR 40,000 for the Turin Book Fair, EUR 75,000 for the stand at the London event and was in negotiations over Romania's space at the Gothenburg fair, with a EUR 60,000 grant quoted.
