Romania takes a third step on the digital path with the new electronic health file

03 April 2013

Romania's medical system will make a new step on the electronic route, with the planned implementation of the Electronic Health File, which should become operational in January 2014. The contract for implementing this new project was won by UTI, is worth some EUR 22.5 million (including VAT) and was signed with the Romanian Health Insurance House at the end of March.

The Electronic Health File should be accessible online and secured, and include all medical information about insured patients, from various sources. According to the Health Insurance House, this is the first such project of its complexity in Romania and among the few in Europe.

The project is co-financed with European funding, and is a third step, after the electronic prescription and the electronic health card. After the implementation of this health file, access to medical information needed in emergency situations should be speedier.
