Romania resumes auction for anti-ship missile systems procurement

26 March 2019

Romania will pay almost EUR 137 million without VAT, on a mobile anti-ship missile system to be deployed on the Black Sea coast. The auction, launched last year and then suspended before the end of the year, was resumed in February.

Four big companies are competing for this contract, according to Hotnews.ro: MBDA, the largest European missile manufacturer (with its Exocet MM40 Block 3 model), Boeing (with the anti-missile rocket Harpoon), Swedish Saab in partnership with Germany’s Diehl Defense (with the Swedish anti-ship missile RBS15 Mk3), and Kongsberg, a Norwegian firm that offers the Naval Stryke Missile (NMS).

The choice of an anti-missile rocket type for coastal batteries could have a much higher stake in the medium and long term, Hotnews.ro commented.

Another purchase that is supposed to carry the same type of weapon, namely the purchase of four multirole corvettes (EUR 1.2 billion to EUR 1.4 billion including the upgrade of existing two corvettes), is currently suspended.
