Roma craftsmen from Romania’s Transylvania collaborate with Swedish designers for Stockholm exhibition

05 February 2016

The Nomadic Design Practices exhibition, a collaboration between the Glimpt Studio in Sweden and Roma craftsmen from Romania’s Transylvania region, will be presented at the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) in Stockholm, during the Design Week to be organized in the Swedish capital.

The opening of the exhibition will take place on February 8.

The project, conducted by the Swedish design studio and the Roma craftsmen in 2015, brings into question the concept of nomadism and its valence, according to Icr.ro.

Mesteshukar ButiQ, an association specialized in developing and reinterpreting the Roma handicraft, initiated this project.

Tor Palm and Mattias Rask, the design duo from the Glimpt Studio, combine traditional processing techniques, new cultures, travel and people in their projects. They've traveled to South Africa, Vietnam, Peru, and, more recently, to Romania, where they’ve started working with Roma craftsmen.

The exhibition will stay open until March 4. Next, the show will move to the Falkenberg Museum, where it will open on April 8 (the International Roma Day).
