Radu Varia becomes first Romanian member of the Royal Scottish Academy

Critic and art historian Radu Varia has become the first ever Romanian to be made a member of The Royal Scottish Academy. Not only is Varia the first Romanian to be elected as an honorary member of the Academy, he is also the first non-British art critic to receive the honor.

The ceremony was held in sumptuous surroundings in Edinburgh, Scotland, with representatives of the UK's Royal Family in attendance. Radu Varia was presented with a diploma of membership signed by Queen Elizabeth II during the event.

The Royal Scottish Academy is unique in Scotland as an independent, privately funded institution led by eminent artists and architects with the purpose of promoting and supporting the creation, understanding and enjoyment of the visual arts through exhibitions and related educational events.
