Prince Harry spends Easter week-end in Romania's Transylvania

09 April 2012

Local news reports that Prince Harry of England spent the Easter weekend in Romania with Count Tibor Kalnoky have been picked up by Associated Press (AP) and English newspaper The Daily Mail. Buckingham Palace has not confirmed the story, which has something of a fairytale ring to it, but did say the young prince was spending the weekend privately with friends. Harry, third in line to the throne after his father Prince Charles and older brother Prince William, stayed with Count Kalnoky at his manor house in Micloșoara, Transylvania, around 50 km north of Brasov, according to AP.

Romanian newswire Mediafax quotes Baraolt mayor Nagy Istvan, saying he met Prince Harry on Monday afternoon and gave him 'tuica' (the local alcoholic beverage). The Prince spent some time at one of the houses his father, prince Charles owns in Romania's Transylvania.

If Prince Harry has indeed visited, it will have been his first time in the country. The Daily Mail even suggests that the Prince flew Wizz Air, reporting a tweet from a passenger who claims to have spotted Prince Harry on a flight. Again, this is unconfirmed, and does not appear in other news stories.

His father is a regular visitor to the region, and has been involved in agriculture, environment and restoration projects in Transylvania and its Saxon villages. Prince Charles also owns several properties in Transylvania.
