Over 8 million cubic meters of water during Bucharest floods after heavy rain, hospitals, universities and homes affected

01 July 2013

Over 8 million cubic meters of water have passed through Bucharest's drainage system during the recent floods, after yesterday's heavy rain (June 30). The worst affected areas appear to have been Sectors 4 and 5 of the city, which have registered the most calls for emergency services.

Crews from Bucharest's water company Apa Nova and the ISU emergency rapid response team have been pumping water out of flooded buildings. Although worse in Sectors 4 and 5, flooding has caused problems across the city, with fire crews being called in to help drain the floodwater and assist the local residents.

Flooding has been reported in two city hospitals – Sfântul Ioan and Marie Curie – where firefighters were in action draining the water. The basements of University faculties, the National Institute of Magistracy and the the Institute of Biology have also been flooded.

Several major routes were blocked by floods, as well as countless streets and residential access roads. However, the authorities report that the situation is under control and all emergencies have been resolved.

The rainfall registered On Sunday (June 30) and in the early hours of Monday (July 1) ranged between 73.8 liters per square meter in Baneasa to 121 liters per square meter in the Sistematizării - Brâncoveanu area.
