The Satu Mare airport in North Western Romania will undergo a revamp worth some EUR 16 million, which will include expanding the airport itself and modernizing the runway, which hasn't been revamped in 30 years. The airport was opened in 1936  and is among the oldest in Romania.  The current building dates from the early 80s.

The funds will also be destined to buying airport security equipment, as well as buses for passenger transport. At least four new check-in areas will be added, as well as a new VIP area, and a boarding area with at least 200 seats.

The runway will be repaired with a EUR 15 million budget which will come from EU funds, via the Transport Ministry, while the rest of the money needed to expand the airport will be covered from the local budget. Construction work should be finalized at end – 2014.
