New strike goes to day two at public transport company in a secondary Romanian city

11 June 2013

Ramnicu Valcea is the third Romanian city where drivers for the public transport system recently went on strike, after Constanta and Brasov, but it appears to be the first where the strike has lasted for a second day in a row. Started yesterday (June 10), the strike continued today, with drivers still asking for a pay rise. “We work like slaves on little money,” they said and also asked for the director of the public transport system in the city to be dismissed. Meanwhile, public transport continues to be suspended in Ramnicu Valcea.

Negotiations took place between the protesters and the management on Monday, together with representatives of city hall, but they failed to reach an agreement. Protesters continue to blame the company's director for having hired unnecessary staff for higher salaries, while the drivers work for very little.

In return, the director said the public transport company will notify the court of the illegal strike and mark the employees as absent from work.
