More than 100,000 foreign tourists visit Romania in January

The number of foreign tourists who visited Romania increased by 14% in January 2015, compared to the same month of last year, to 104,100. The number of nights spent by foreigners in local hotels also went up by 18%, to 221,800, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INS).

The number of European tourists increased by 7.4%, to over 80,000. Italy surpassed Germany in terms of incoming tourists, with 12,550 Italians visiting Romania, compared to 10,570 Germans. Israel was third, with a little over 10,000 visitors. Moldova Republic, France and UK are next in terms of incoming tourists, followed by the US.

The vast majority of foreign tourists, namely 80%, visited Bucharest and other large cities, and only 20% went to mountains resorts and other tourist destinations.

The number of Romanian tourists registered in local hotels in January increased by 18% compared to last year, to 394,300. About 26% of these went to mountain resorts (up from less than 23% in January 2014).

The total number of tourists who checked in hotels in Romania in January was close to 500,000, 73,000 more than in January 2014.
