Govt. earmarks EUR 1.2 bln for 68-km motorway in NE Romania

01 April 2019

Romania’s prime minister Viorica Dancila announced on March 29 that the Government would set aside EUR 1.2 billion from the state budget for building under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) the 68-km motorway linking the town of Târgu Neamţ to the city of Iaşi in North-Eastern Romania.

The motorway is expected to be commissioned within four years.

"We approve today the feasibility study for the strategic investment project, the Târgu-Neamţ - Iaşi motorway, under a public-private partnership. The project is vital for the region of Moldova. The total investment is estimated at EUR 1.2 billion and the design and construction period of the motorway is expected to last 48 months. The project envisages the construction of 68 km of the motorway. The economic effects of attracting investments in this region, as well as the social effects, are enhanced by the motorway being linked to the Bucharest-Suceava high-speed road under preparation at the Ministry of Transport," Dancila stated.

The auction for picking up the private partner will take place in April.

Târgu-Neamţ - Iaşi motorway should be part of the bigger project Târgu Mureş - Iaşi, a highway that should connect the Moldova region to the Transylvania highway and Western Europe. However, the authorities don't currently have a timeline for the Târgu Mureş - Târgu-Neamţ highway.
