GdF Suez: EUR 4 bln needed a year for energy infrastructure upgrade in Romania

08 May 2015

Romania needs investments of EUR 3 - 4 billion annually to upgrade its energy infrastructure, said Eric Stab, president of GdF Suez in Romania. These investments should be made every year until 2035.

Many of Romania’s power plants are outdated, and should be closed as they don’t respect environmental rules. The current power plants use much fuel, which affects their efficiency.

Romania has an installed capacity of 22,000 megawatts, but it only needs 1,500 MW.

“We need to find people to invest, you need confidence for investing. What happened in the renewable energy sector has a negative impact on investments, after investments of over EUR 7 billion in the last years,” said the GdF Suez Romania president, cited by local Mediafax.

In 2013, Romania changed the support scheme for the renewable energy sector, reducing the number of green certificates.
