Three trams collide, derail in Bucharest accident, at least 86 injured

Four trams collided on Thursday morning at Lujerului underground pass in Bucharest, leaving at least 35 passengers injured. Most of them sustained fractures and three of them, with head trauma, were rushed to the hospital.

A tram broke down while in the Lujerului underground pass, and the following tram could not break in due time. Two other trams coming from behind were also involved in the accident. Following the impact, two of the trams derailed. The collision could not be avoided as trams were at a short distance from each other, according to the Bucharest Public Transport company.

The trams carried hundreds of passengers, many of which, apart from sustaining injuries, also had panic attacks following the accident, according to authorities.

Traffic was blocked on Thursday morning on the line 41 on the way to the Free Press Square. The Romanian Mobile Emergency Service for Resuscitation and Extrication (SMURD) and 14 Emergency Situation teams arrived on site.

UPDATE: At least 86 were injured in the accident, which involved only three trams. The fourth was able to break in due time. SEven poeople of those who were injured stayed in the hospital with more severe injuries. Tram traffic re-started around 14,00 on the line 41.
