Former Romanian PM, now mayor of Cluj, wants EUR 100 mln underground pass for his city

11 January 2013

The city of Cluj, in Western Romania, could have an underground passage and a car free historic area, if the municipality can get planned projects going. The Cluj – Napoca mayor Emil Boc, former Prime Minister, plans to build a one-kilometer tunnel and an underground car parking which would ease downtown of its traffic burden.

The project would cost some EUR 100 million and the bulk of it should be covered by European funds, according to the plan. The project was launched for public debate, along with the Southern ring road for the city, which would also take away some of the traffic in downtown Cluj – Napoca.

Cluj – Napoca, the capital of the Cluj county, has some 300,000 inhabitants, while the  county has around 660,000 in total.
