Flute player Matei Ioachimescu to perform at the Romanian Athenaeum this week-end

Romanian flute player Matei Ioachimescu will perform on November 27, from 19,00 hours, at the Romanian Athenaeum, together with a group of other musicians: guitarists Mihai Cojocaru and George Popescu, flutist Mihaela Anica and pianist Horia Maxim.

The event, called 'Toward the Sea' is organized by the “George Enescu” philharmonic and by the ViennArt foundation. The five musicians will performs pieces by Maurice Ravel, Astor Piazzolla, Jacques Ibert, Arthur Honegger, Toru Takemitsu and Dmitri Şostakovici.

Matei Ioachimescu was born in Bucharest, Romania, in 1978.  He was surrounded by music from childhood on (his father was a composer) and started playing the piano at the age of five.With the flute he got first in contact nine years later, studying at the "George Enescu" Music High School in Bucharest with Vasile Gantolea. Further he also studied with Ionut Stefanescu and Pierre-Yves Artaud (of the Conservatoire de Paris) and also attended masterclasses with Heidi Peter Indermühle (of Music University, Bern) and Aurele Nicolet. At the age of 17 he won the first prize at the Romanian National Music Competition and one year later he was accepted with highest grades at the University of Music in Bucharest to study with Virgil Francu. In 1998 Matei Ioachimescu moved to Vienna to begin a new musical journey, guided and supported by Prof. Barbara Gisler - Haase. Matei Ioachimescu has a "Master of Arts" Degree at the Vienna Music University. He is an active member of "Live Music Now" (Yehudi Menuhin's Foundation in Vienna). Since 2003 he is playing the first flute of "George Enescu" Philharmonic Orchestra (Bucharest, Romania) and in 2006 he founded the "Dot.Duo" with the russian guitarist Oleg Dergilev. He is the co-founder of the "Spirit Of Vienna Ensemble". Currently Matei Ioachimescu is performing with the pianist Horia Maxim.
