Finance Minister: 30 of Romania’s richest can’t justify their fortunes

10 November 2014

A total of 30 of Romania’s richest people are on the tax administration ANAF’s black list as they can’t justify their fortunes, according to Romanian Finance Minister Ioana Petrescu.

“ANAF initially looked at a wider group of people. They’ve then narrowed it down to 30 people that couldn’t clearly justify the large fortunes,” said Petrescu, cited by local Capital.ro.

The rich Romanians investigated by ANAF are mostly men aged over 50 with fortunes between EUR 20 million and EUR 1 billion, with businesses in real estate, agriculture or industry.

Fiscal inspectors are to determine if these businessmen have avoided paying their taxes.
