EU Commissioner for Enlargement: Bulgaria, Romania's accession questions EU enlargement credibility

27 June 2014

The EU member states and candidate countries have grown tired by the slow pace of the enlargement process and, above all, the accession of Romania and Bulgaria raised a lot of questions about the credibility of the process, said EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Stefan Fule, in an interview for EurActiv Czech Republic, reports local Agerpres.

When asked what changes took place in the EU enlargement process in the last five years, Fule said that both member states and the candidate countries got tired by the slow pace of the enlargement process.

“Above all, the accession of Romania and Bulgaria brought a lot of questions about the credibility of the entire process. Because it was the first time the EU decided to introduce a special mechanism for cooperation and verification on the member states," he said, reports Agerpres.

He added that the “biggest challenge was to regain the lost credibility of the enlargement process”.
