EC: Constanta Port must drive Romania’s economic development

24 March 2017

Karla Peijs, the European Coordinator of the Rhine-Danube Corridor from the European Commission, said that Romania should try to make navigation on the Danube possible throughout the year.

“It is cheaper to create conditions for navigation on Danube all year round than to build roads and railways,” said Peijs, reports local Ziarul Financiar.

The Danube is currently Romania’s only uninterrupted "highway" from Constanta to Western Europe, but in summer, when the Danube flow decreases, naval traffic is difficult.

“Danube’s development can bring economic growth for Romania,” said Karla Peijs. “Constanta should drive the development of the Romanian economy.”

The GDP of the Constanta county has grown two times faster than that the rest of the economy since the opening of the Bucharest-Constanta highway in November 2012 until now.
