Drought in Romania will result in 15% price rises on poultry by year end

26 September 2012

The increase of feed price for poultry by 30-35 percent from August because of the drought damaging crops in Romania will result in poultry prices for consumers rising by 15 percent by the end of the year, said Ilie Van, president of the Poultry Breeders Union of Romania (UCPR).

Another factor for high prices of poultry meat will be the increases in fuel and energy costs.

"Poultry prices will rise about 5 percent at the farmer’s gate by the end of the year, but that does not reflect the prices in shops. Generally, price increases on the shelves are three times higher than farm gate price rises," said Van.

The poultry market is estimated to value around EUR 1 billion annually in Romania, but has shown stagnation in recent year.
