Democratic Union of Hungarians leaves Romanian Government

28 November 2014

The Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) has decided to leave the coalition government, UDMR leader Kelemen Hunor said yesterday. The decision has yet to be validated by the Permanent Council of the Union, on December 13.

"Even without us, the Ponta Government has a majority. Political stability does not depend on our participation in the Government. We don’t want to create instability, there is no such intention to give the Government a negative vote," Kelemen said, quoted by Mediafax.

"According to our calculations, 80 percent of our voters voted in the second round of the presidential elections with Klaus Iohannis. From our side there is no message against anyone. We decided to strengthen our relationship with voters," the UDMR leader added.
