Contaminated water found in Bucharest, authorities advise drinking only bottled water

24 June 2013

Tests have revealed ground water contamination in the Pipera area of Bucharest. The authorities discovered trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene in the water during tests carried out in May and have advised people living in the area not to drink the tap water.

The public health directorate has recommended only using bottled water for consumption until the water in the Pipera area gets the all clear. The pollutants are normally used in textile production and in dry cleaning and these are usually the original sources of the chemicals when found as contaminants in water.

Some mild and non-specific symptoms are associated with consumption of water polluted by trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene and anyone suffering from chronic nausea, constipation, episodic diarrhea or irritation of the skin is advised to seek medical advice.
