18 November 2014

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel, one of the most powerful political leaders in the world, congratulated Klaus Iohannis for his victory in Romania’s presidential elections and assured him that Germany will remain a reliable partner for Romania, according to a letter published on the German Federal Government’s website.

“I congratulate you warmly for your election as President of Romania,” started Merkel’s letter.

She says that the relations between Germany and Romania are very good, as the two countries this year celebrate 25 years since the end of the Cold War and they are both cooperating within the EU and NATO.

“We will support Romania, both with advice and in action, to continue the important reforms for your country and for the European Union, and we will remain a reliable partner. I am convinced that we can deepen our relationship further,” Merkel said, wishing Iohannis success in his new role.

Germany’s President Joachim Gauck also congratulated Iohannis and ensured him of Germany’s support and cooperation.

Klaus Iohannis, a German ethnic from Sibiu, was elected president of Romania on November 16. He benefited from an almost unprecedented wave of popular support and beat Prime Minister Victor Ponta by a wide margin, although he was 10 percentage points behind Ponta in the first round of the elections, on November 2.
