Central Bank: Fees charged by banks in Romania, too high

27 May 2015

Banks active in Romania charge too high fees and commission for operations, especially given the current level of interest rates, said Mugur Isarescu, governor of the Romanian Central Bank.

The nominal interest rates amount now to 1.5%-3%, while the inflation rate dropped to 1%.Banks should rely in the future on internal resources for lending, and should encourage savings.

Deponents perceive fees higher, as the interest rates went down to 1-2-3%.

A fee for a banking operation that reaches 0.5% or 1% of the amount seems higher now, Isarescu explained, cited by local Agerpres. Banks should avoid discouraging savings.
