Carrefour to open new hypermarket in Romania’s Galati by end-2013

Retailer Carrefour will open its 25th hypermarket in Romania in the last quarter of this year, the company has recently announced.

The new unit will cover 9,600 sqm and will be opened in Shopping City Galati, a retail center developed by NEPI in Galati, southeastern Romania. The retailer didn’t disclose the value of the investment.

“The Shopping City Galati retail center, developed by NEPI in collaboration with Carrefour Romania, will support the economic development in the Galati area, by creating a significant number of jobs,” said Anca Damour, director of Carrefour Property Romania, who however did not mention the exact number of jobs.

Shopping City Galati will be built on an area of around 12 hectares and will include, besides the Carrefour hypermarket, a 20,000 sqm shopping mall, a food court, an entertainment area and a total of 1,400 free parking places.

French group Carrefour currently runs 122 stores in Romania, of which 24 Carrefour hypermarkets, 69 supermarkets under the brand Market and 28 proximity shops Express.
