Investigation at Bucharest airport after passengers enter the country without ID control

13 June 2016

Some of the companies operating at Bucharest’s Otopeni Airport are currently investigated for alleged acts of negligence after dozens of passengers entered Romania without having their identification papers checked, reports local Mediafax.

On June 7, a Corfu-Bucharest charter flight, which had a stopover in Cluj, landed at the Otopeni Airport with 180 people on board. Two buses took the passengers right after the plane landed. Most of the passengers were taken to the domestic arrivals terminal where nobody checked their documents, officials of the Inspectorate General of Border Police (IGBP) told Mediafax. This means that they’ve entered Romania without being processed by border police officers as required for external flights.

The Border Police has questioned the airline’s employees and the staff of the company that operated the buses. The IGBP officials said that this was not a serious security incident, as the passengers had been checked through the special system of the National Unit for Passengers.

Bucharest’s’ Otopeni Airport and the Baneasa International Airport saw a record number of over 9.2 million passengers and over 108,500 takeoffs and landings in 2015.
