More Romanian students pass the Baccalaureate exam, but fewer get perfect scores

Two-thirds (66.4%) of the Romanian high-school graduates passed this year’s first session of the Baccalaureate exam, up by 7 percentage points (pp) compared to last year, when 59.2% of the students who took the exam passed. In 2013, the rate was even lower, at 54.4%.

The highest Baccalaureate passing rates were registered in Cluj county (82%), Brasov (78.7%), and Bacau (78.3%), according to official data released by the Education Ministry. The lowest rates were in Giurgiu, where just over a third (36%) of the students managed to pass, Ilfov (41%) and Teleorman (43%). Giurgiu and Teleorman are also among the country’s poorest counties.

In Bucharest, 68% of all students passed the exam, up by almost 10 percentage points compared to 2013. The passing rates varied from 75.2% in District 1 to 54.4% in District 5, where the average income is also lower.

Some 63 students took perfect scores (10) at the Baccalaureate exam this year, down from 104 last year. The highest numbers of perfect scores were in Timis county (10), Maramures (7) and Iasi (5).

Almost 160,000 high-school graduates took the Baccalaureate exam this year, 106,000 of which passed the exam. The 53,000 who failed can register for the second session, which will take place in the second half of August.
