Australian Open: Romanian Copil eliminated by Wawrinka, Tecau and Begu make it to the second round in doubles

Romanian tennis player Marius Copil, the only Romanian qualified on the main board of the Australian Open men singles competition, lost his match against Swiss star Stanislas Wawrinka, on Wednesday.

Copil didn’t go down without a fight against the world’s number four, however, and only lost the first two sets on tiebreak. The match ended in three sets (7-6, 7-6, 6-3). Reaching the second round remains his best performance at the Australian Open. Before the tournament, Copil was 194th in the ATP ranking.

Romanian tennis player Horia Tecau and his doubles partner Dutchman Jean-Julien Rojer qualified to the second round of the Australian Open. They beat Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis and Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer in two sets, ended 6-4, 6-2. Tecau and Rojer will face Australian pair Lleyton Hewit – Chris Guccione in the second round of the doubles competition.

Romanians Irina-Camelia Begu and Monica Niculescu have also qualified for the second round of the women doubles competition while Raluca Olaru was eliminated in the first round.

Irina Begu pairs with Spanish player Lara Arruabarrena. The two beat Chinese couple Zhaoxuan Yang - Qiu Yu Ye, in the first round, in three sets, ended 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. They will meet another Chinese pair in the second round.

Monica Niculescu and Russian Vitalia Diatchenko won their first match against American couple Lauren Davis – Christina McHale, also in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 6-3). They will play against another American duo Raquel Kops-Jones - Abigail Spears, in the second round.
