Annual inflation rate almost flat in May for Romania

Romania's annual inflation rate dropped slightly to 1.79 percent in May this year, from 1.8 percent the month before, according to data from the country's Statistics Office (INS).

Potatoes and fresh fruits were more expensive in May, by 12.7 and 4.9 percent respectively month-on-month, while eggs were 19.6 percent cheaper.

Non-food products saw prices up 0.21 percent month-on-month, higher for oil and gas – 0.73 percent and for spare parts – 0.52 percent. Prices of services were up 0.53 percent.

The average monthly inflation rate in the first five months of 2012 was of 0.3 percent, compared to 0.6 percent month-on-month during the same period of 2011.

Romania is targeting inflation of 3.2 percent in 2012 and 3 percent in 2013.
