2015 Berlinale: Romanian producer back in competition against big names for Golden Bear award

Ada Solomon, producer of Romanian movie Aferim!, will compete with Jafar Panahi, the Dardenne brothers and Juan de Dios Larrain for the Golden Bear award at this year’s edition of Berlin International Film Festival.  Aferim! is directed by Romanian Radu Jude.

The Golden Bear for Best Film award is the festival’s grand prize and is awarded to the film’s producer.

Productions by Jahar Panahi (Taxi), the Dardenne brothers (Journal d’une femme de chamber – directed by Benoit Jacquot), Nicolas Gonda (producer of Terrence Malick’s films and of Knight of Cups), or Juan de Dios Larrain (producer of El Club  and No  - directed by Pablo Larrain and Gloria – directed by Sebastian Lelio) compete for this award.

Aferim! is a historical movie placed in XIX century Wallachia (Tara Romaneasca), directed by Romanian Radu Jude. Its world premiere is scheduled for February 11, at Berlinale Palast. Watch the trailer below.

Ada Solomon is back in Berlinale’s official competition two years after winning the first Golden Bear in the history of Romanian film for Child’s Pose (Pozitia Copilului), directed by Călin Peter Netzer.

She is the producer of some of Radu Jude’s most important movies, such as The Tube with a Hat (Lampa cu caciula – 2006) short film, The Happiest Girl in the World (Cea mai fericita fata din lume – 2009) and Everybody in Our Family (Toata lumea din familia noastra – 2012).

Solomon is currently working on a new feature film signed Radu Jude - Scarred Hearts (Inimi cicatrizate), based on Max Blecher’s novel.

Romanian Teodor Corban, lead actor in Romanian film Aferim!, also competes in this year’s Belinale, for the Silver Bear – Best Actor award.

Another Romanian movie, Why me? (De ce eu?), directed by Tudor Giurgiu, will compete in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival.

The film festival will end on February 15.
