Young Romanian climbs the highest volcano in the world, sets new age record

11 December 2015

Dor Geta Popescu, a young Romanian girl aged 12, has climbed Ojos del Salado, the world’s highest active volcano. She is now the youngest climber that has ever reached the volcano’s 6,893m peak. Ojos del Salado is located on the Chile/Argentina border, in the Atacama desert.

The young Romanian climber needed a 10-day acclimatization period, reports local Adevarul. The ascent lasted 9 hours.

“Yes, I did it! I’m happy that I’ve made it despite Ojos del Salado’s difficult conditions of altitude, wind, temperature and aridity,” she said, adding that she would get ready for other record climbing.

Following this performance, Dor Geta Popescu has met the objectives set for 2015 as a member of Altitude Mountain Sports Club.

By the age of 14, the Romanian wants to complete the 7 Volcanoes and the 7 Summits circuits.

Dor Geta Popescu participates in mountain expeditions since she was 10. At the time of ascents, she set international age records on Mount Ararat (5,165m – in 2013 at the age of 10), and Sabalan (4,811m), and Damavand (5,671m – in 2014 at the age of 11), an European age record on Elbrus (5,642m – in 2015 at the age of 12), and a national one on Kilimanjaro (5,895m – in 2015 at the age of 12).
