Vodka sales up in Romania, but per capita consumption lower than in Poland, Russia

Vodka consumption in Romania reached 20 million litres last year, a growth of 8.4 percent on 2011, according to Romanian daily Ziarul Financiar.

Half of this amount was sold in the last quarter of 2012, the paper reported.

A Romanian thus drinks a litre of vodka each year, or 25 glasses, according to ZF, which is lower than in Poland, 7 litres a year, and Russia, 14 litres per year per capita.

Sales of vodka comes second in terms of spirits sales volume in Romania, after flavoured spirits such as the traditional tuica, which sold about 160 million litres in 2012.

According to ZF, the value of the vodka market in Romania is of around EUR 190 million, representing a decline of about 20 percent compared to 2008.
