Violent protests in Chisinau, after Parliament votes new Government

21 January 2016

Thousands of people protested yesterday in front of the Parliament in Chisinau, the capital of the Republic of Moldova, to denounce the recently appointed Government of the Prime Minister Pavel Filip.

The protests started after the Parliament granted yesterday the confidence vote to the new Government led by Filip, a member of the Democratic Party (PDM).

Several dozen people managed to break into the Parliament, after breaking the improvised protection barrier set up by the police forces. The protesters used sprays to get into the Parliament. They apparently assaulted the former Prime Minister Mihai Ghimpu, the leader of the Liberal Party (PLM) for supporting the new Government.

The European Union, and the US have both sent messages asking for a peaceful resolution of the protests.

“We are encouraging the parts to start a dialogue,” reads a press release of the European Union.

“The United States urges the protesters and police in Chisinau to keep calm,” according to the US Embassy in Chisinau.
