US Embassy to open American Corner in Romania's National Library, Bucharest

The US Embassy will open an American Corner in the National Library in Bucharest on Thursday (June 20). The American Corner scheme has already been set up in Bacau, Baia Mare, Cluj-Napoca, Constanta, Craiova, Iasi, Timisoara and Targu Mures and now comes to Bucharest's National Library.

The scheme provides information and resources on the USA with the aim of furthering cultural understanding and partnership between the US and Romania. Among the activities on offer will be guest speakers from the US talking on varied subjects, English language lessons, film screenings followed by discussions, meetings with American diplomats, workshops, exhibitions, reading clubs, presentations on studying in the US, and special events dedicated to celebrating America.

Library Director General, Elena Tîrziman Culture Minister Daniel-Constantin Barbu and Charge d'Affaires of the US Embassy Duane Butcher will lead the inauguration ceremony in the National Library's Atrium, before going to cut the red tape on the new American Corner.

The American Corner scheme has been running in Romania in 2005 and is primarily a resource and information center for audiences of all ages interested in American culture and society, as well as a platform for discussion about the United States and contemporary world issues, according to the US Embassy.
