Romanian private healthcare operator MedLife will launch co-branded health insurance together with insurer Generali on February 13. This comes soon after another private healthcare operator, Regina Maria, announced a similar move with insurer Groupama. MedLife and Generali's new insurance product will be called Vital.

Regina Maria and Groupama were the first to sign such a partnership in Romania, after having worked for six months on structuring the product, which will be available starting March this year. This is a medical subscription combined with a medical insurance, with direct reimbursement, and without a threshold. “This will allow us to cover the medical needs of a segment of the population we did not focus on with our services so far: retail and small and medium enterprises,” said Fady Chreih, executive director of the Regina Maria network.

The Complete Medical Insurance from Groupama and Regina Maria is structured in three service packages, which cover services like lab analysis, treatment and examination, as well as surgery and hospitalization. The package can include maternity services as well as treatment in hospitals abroad.

Romania's private healthcare sector is almost entirely supported via the subscriptions paid by patients, and the latest two moves suggest a new business model will emerge, based on medical insurance. MedLife and Regina Maria are two of the largest private healthcare operators in Romania.
