The Telegraph Travel includes Romanian road in a list of 10 best drives in Europe

25 January 2016

The Telegraph Travel has made a list of 10 best drives in Europe and included Romania’s high altitude road Transfagarasan in it.

Former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson has named Transfagarasan the best driving road in the world and the Telegraph Travel journalist agrees with this statement in his recent story The 10 best driving holidays in Europe.

“Whichever way you look at it, it is an extraordinary feat of engineering: a stretch of tarmac packed with tunnels, viaducts and bridges and which takes the skill of navigating hairpin bends to new heights,” the journalist writes.

According to the Telegraph Travel, tourists should drive on Transfagarasan in summer or autumn, as the road is usually closed from late October until the end of June because of the snow.

The Romanian road is ninth in the list that also includes roads in Austria, France, Germany, Iceland, and Ireland. Find the entire list here.

The spectacular Transfagarasan road was built on the orders of Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu between 1970 and 1974 to ensure a strategic military route through the mountains. It includes Romania’s longest road tunnel (887 meters).

Travel planner: The Transfagarasan, Romania’s high altitude winding road to greatness.
