Technical unemployment at failed gold mine project in Romania

17 February 2015

The Rosia Montana Gold Corporation (RMGC) has announced that 70% of its employees will enter technical unemployment indefinitely as of today, February 17, due to uncertainties on the authorization of the Rosia Montana gold mining project, reports local Hotnews.ro.

In January, Gabriel Resources, the majority shareholder in the RMGC project, sent a formal notification to the country’s President and Prime Minister asking for a consultation process to kick off the project, to avoid an international arbitration.

President Klaus Iohannis recently said that the project has been wrongly approached and new talks between the Government, the companies and those involved should take place.

Romania postponed without a due date the authorization for the mining project in Rosia Montana, after massive protests took place across the country in 2013.
