Steel maker Mechel ceases production at two Romanian factories after heavy snow fall

15 February 2012

Steel producer Mechel will temporarily cease production at its facilities in Romania, Mechel Campia Turzii and Ductil Steel Buzau due to the bad weather in the country, which caused supply issues. The heavy snowfall in the previous days left the two production units isolated, while traffic for larger vehicles was partially or totally suspended on some roads in the country, especially in the southern and south-eastern areas of Romania.

Mechel plans to re-start production on February 22 in Buzau (Buzau county, SE Romania)  and February 24 in Campia Turzii (in Cluj county, central Romania). The interruption to production will not have heavy effects on the planned production volume for this year, said Andrey Deineko, general manager of Mechel Steel.

Romania was under Orange and Yellow Codes for snow and blizzard in the last two weeks. Most affected were southern and south-eastern areas of the country, where roads were closed down and villages snow-bound. Authorities are still struggling to unblock roads and clear snow in tens of villages in the affected areas.
