UEFA urges Romania to extend Bucharest’s metro to the airport

19 February 2015

Bucharest metro operator Metrorex will allocate about EUR 8.6 million this year to start building the metro line between the Bucharest main train station Gara de Nord and the Henri Coanda Airport in the north of the Romanian capital.

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has asked the Romanian authorities to finish the metro line by 2020, as four football matches within the final tournament of the UEFA European Championship will take place in Bucharest in 2020, reports local Mediafax.

In October 2013, Prime Minister Victor Ponta said that the metro line between the Henri Coanda Airport and Bucharest would be economically inefficient, as too few passengers would travel that route.

Metrorex has an almost RON 2 billion (EUR 449 million) budget for investments this year.
