Selective waste collection in Romania, below European average

12 February 2015

More than half of Romanians (60%) prefer to selectively collect plastic bottles and other plastic items, which is however below the European average of 90%.

The European Commission has published its most recent Eurobarometer, within the Generation Awake campaign, a pan-European initiative to reduce and recover waste.

Over 60% of Romanians would like to have more recycling facilities in their areas while 58% of them would like to receive more insurance that waste is indeed recycled.

Almost half of those surveyed say they need more information on how and where waste is separated while 40% would selectively collect more if they were offered financial incentives.

Romania, together with Bulgaria, Latvia and Cyprus, rank last among the EU countries for willingness to sort waste.
