Romania’s transport master plan: 650 km of highways by 2030

01 October 2014

Romania only needs some 656 kilometers of highways and 2,200 km of express roads, according to its transport master plan. The country would have to pay some EUR 6.2 billion on the highways, and EUR 17.5 billion on the express roads, by 2030, according to Agerpres.

By then, the country should have built the Sibiu – Brasov highway – 105 km, the Ploiesti – Comarnic one (49 km), Craiova – Pitesti (115 km), Brasov – Bacau (158 km), Gilau – Bors (177 km), and Comarnic – Brasov (54 km). The master plan includes 16 express roads projects. Romania currently has 644 km of highway, but no express roads.

The former Transport Minister Dan Sova said some 2,440 km of highway should have been done by 2020, but statements have changed after the current minister, Ioan Rus, took over. He said Romania will reach about 600 extra km of highway by 2020. The current master plan covers the period 2014-2030, and is mandatory to access EU funds.
