Romania's Transgaz gets EUR 179 mln for gas interconnector project

20 January 2016

The European Union member states have agreed on the European Commission’s proposal to invest EUR 217 million in 15 trans-European energy infrastructure projects.

Romania's gas transporter Transgaz will receive the largest amount, namely EUR 179 million, to build the Romanian section of a gas pipeline that will go from Bulgaria to Austria.

Of the 15 projects that have been selected, nine are in the natural gas sector and will benefit from EUR 207 million whereas six are in the electricity sector and will get EUR 10 million.

“With this funding we will help secure supplies and fully integrate Europe's energy market by connecting networks across Europe,” said the European Commissioner Energy Miguel Arias Cañete.

The interconnector that links the gas networks of Romania, Hungary, Austria and Bulgaria will bring natural gas from the Caspian area to Central Europe.
