Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, who finished third in this year's  WTA ranking of the best women tennis players in the world, was nominated for October player of the month, for her performance of reaching the final of the WTA Finals tournament in Singapore.

Halep, who played in the tournament for the first time in her career, defeated Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard and American number one Serena Williams in the group stage of the tournament, and then she beat Polish Agnieszka Radwanska in the semifinals. Although she lost the final to champion Serena Williams, she made quite an impression and even got Serena to call her the future number one.

Simona Halep and Serena Williams compete again, this time for the player of the month award, for which the American was also nominated. The third nomination is German Andreea Petkovic, who won the WTA Tournament of Champions in Sofia.

This nomination to the player of the month trophy is the third for Romanian Halep this season, after she was also nominated in May and July. She didn’t win on any of the occasions.

Serena Williams and Russian Maria Sharapova (no. 2 WTA) each won the award three times this year, Czech Petra Kvitova, Chinese Li Na and American Venus Williams, also won this award in 2014.
