Romania's President passes law which raises salaries in public sector

25 November 2015

President Klaus Iohannis promulgated on November 24 the law that increases the salaries in the public sector by 10% starting December 1.

The Parliament had recently approved the emergency ordinance issued by the former government which increases the salaries of those working in the public health care system by 25%, including the amendment of a social democrat MP which provides that all salaries in the public sector should go up by 10%.

The amendment, which leads to the increase in the budget deficit by some RON 5 billion (EUR 1.1 billion) in 2016, was approved by 311 of the 318 MPs who were present.

Initially, the new Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos said that the new Government would apply the 10% increase only if the budget allowed such a measure. However, the Government later announced that it would apply the laws adopted by the Parliament on salaries and pensions.
