Romania's PM dismisses consumer protection head after Colectiv tragedy

04 November 2015

Romania’s Prime Minister Victor Ponta dismissed Marius Dunca, the head of the National Authority for Consumer Protection ANPC, on Tuesday evening while protesters in Bucharest were asking the Government to take responsibility for the tragedy that killed 32 in a Bucharest club on Friday.

Dunca said that he found out about his dismissal while he was speaking „live” in a TV show.

“It is a surprise for me. If ANPC is to blame for everything that goes wrong in this country, we will take on this blame. But I don’t think that ANPC is guilty,” the former head of the Consumer Protection Authority said, reports local Mediafax.

Dunca added that ANPC had received a notice on the Colectiv club on Thursday, one day before the tragedy, and a club representative had to come at the ANPC office on Friday.

Marius Dunca thus became the first official dismissed after the tragedy which had taken place in the Colectiv club in Bucharest last week. A fire broke out killing 32 and injuring over 180.

Tens of thousands of people gathered yesterday in downtown Bucharest asking authorities to resign.
