Romania's Parliament rejects new Mining Law on lower than required turnout

10 December 2013

The Romanian Parliament rejected the new Mining Law in its Tuesday voting session (December 10). the law would have allowed the controversial gold mining project at Rosia Montana to start. The law was rejected in the Chamber of Deputies because of the insufficient number of votes. 160 MPs votes, out of which 105 were against, and 22 abstentions.

The law would have required 204 votes. Some of the MPs which abstained fro the vote were from the National Liberal Party and from the Social Democratic Party, both part of the ruling coalition.

The rejection in the Chamber of Deputies comes after a similar one in the Senate earlier this year. Since then, the law has been modified in the special commissions, promising to offer a high level of transparency for any mining projects across Romania.
