Romania's Metrorex plans contactless subway access system

Bucharest metro operator Metrorex wants to upgrade the control system which allows access to the subway network. The value of the project amounts to EUR 42 million.

Metrorex will award a contract via an open tender, with bids to be submitted by June 23. The winning bidder will modernize the control installations for 41 metro stations.

The metro operator has proposed a technological solution which allows subway entrance via a contactless card. The current system, dating back from 1995, works with magnetic cards.

Metrorex will finance the project with European funds and money from the budget. The deadline to complete the modernization is about nine months from the attribution date.
