Romania’s high altitude road Transalpina stays closed due to bad weather

04 June 2014

Romania’s mountain road Transalpina will remain closed due to bad weather conditions and recent snow, and it will probably open for traffic after June 15, according to the head of Valcea Mountain Rescue Team, Mircea Lera.

“It snowed three days ago on Transalpina. At 2,000 meters altitude, the snow is one meter. Winter temperatures are registered during the night, so there is also ice. The road remains closed,” Lera told local news agency Agerpres.

Transalpina was usually opened for traffic in this period, but the bad weather and the longer winter are now keeping the road closed.

“It’s important that tourists take into account or warnings,” Lera added.

At an altitude of 2,145 meters, DN67C, also known as Transalpina, is the highest road in Romania. The other high altitude road in Romania is Transfagarasan.
